Frequently Asked Questions

What is Kinslayers?

Kinslayers is a tactical skirmish wargame set in the rich and perilous world of Anduin. Players command warbands, forge legendary leaders, and engage in strategic battles against elemental forces and rival factions. The game blends fast-paced combat with deep narrative elements, allowing players to shape their own warbands and carve their place in Anduin’s unfolding saga.

Kinslayers is supported by three core books, each expanding the gameplay experience:

The Core Books

1️⃣ The Compendium – Core Rulebook & Skirmish System.
2️⃣ The Chronicle – Narrative Role Play Campaign Expansion.
3️⃣ The Beastarium – New units, monsters, and dual/battle modes.

  • The Compendium (Core Rulebook - Skirmish Warfare)
A fast-paced tactical skirmish game with limitless customization, deep strategy, and flexible mechanics (This is all you need to play skirmish wargames).
  • The Campaign Chronicle (Campaign Book - Narrative Roleplay)
Expands the game adding role play, world exploration, crafts, familiars and immersive storytelling akin to tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons.
  • The Beastarium (Expanded Units, Monsters & Game Modes)
Introduces new creatures, titans, and alternative playstyles, including arena style combat and larger scale battles incorporating all unit types.

Together, these books create a seamless blend of skirmish warfare, world-building, and narrative-driven roleplay.

Creating Your Leader How do I create my own leader?

Players customize their own leader by choosing:

  • Name, Race and Elemental Affinity
  • Unique abilities, flaws, and fighting style
  • Appearance, backstory, and moral alignment

Gameplay mechanics use the 'Favours, Flaws, Form & Fuse' system, allowing for endless customization.

Miniatures & Customization Can I use my own miniatures?

Yes! Kinslayers is fully mini-agnostic, allowing players to use:

  • 3D-printed miniatures
  • Custom-sculpted or modified figures
  • Kitbashed models from their own collection

While official STL files are in development, the game encourages player creativity and freedom.

Can players create their own factions?

Absolutely! Players are encouraged to create:

  • Custom factions, warbands, and backstories
  • Unique characters and motives
  • Personalized armies that shape Anduin’s evolving history

Magic & Combat Mechanics How does magic affect gameplay?

Each leader and warband wields one of six elemental magics, which:

  • Shape tactics with unique spells & abilities
  • Change between battles or focus on a singular element

How do you resolve combat?

Combat is resolved through dice rolls, player choices, and tactical positioning. Unlike traditional turn-based games, players move all their warband units sequentially on their turn.

How long does a typical game last?

A game lasts 1 to 2 hours, depending on warband size and battle complexity.

Can I play Kinslayers solo?

Yes! The game includes a solo mode with NPC creature rules for engaging single-player experiences.

Is there a campaign mode?

Yes! Book 2 (The Chronicle) introduces:

  • An official campaign with progression-based storytelling.
  • Introduction of Crafts & Familiars.
  • Warband development over multiple battles.
  • Multiple ways to play (E.g. Single Character, Warband).
  • A mix of structured scenarios & sandbox-style play.

Are other expansions planned?

Yes! and no - while I have no expansions planned at this time in relation to the Kinslayers and the world of Anduin I would not rule it out.  I am also considering ways in which I might be able to open the rule-set up and provide it as a platform for game masters and creative players alike.

Development & Behind the Scenes How was Kinslayers created?

Kinslayers began in 2021, inspired by:

  • High-fantasy novels, PC games, and tabletop skirmish wargames.
  • A desire for deep personalised player customization & high magic tactical combat.
  • Expanding Anduin’s lore from a novel into a full epic fantasy game world.

Does Kinslayers use AI?

Kinslayers is an solo independent project where AI-assisted tools were used for concept art, editing, and brainstorming. However, the world, mechanics, and lore are all original.

What tools & equipment were used in development?

🛠 Equipment & Software:

  • Bambu Lab P1P 3D Printer (Filament)
  • Elegoo Saturn 4 Ultra (Resin Miniatures)
  • Canva Pro (Book & marketing design)
  • Mixam Print (High-quality book drafts)
  • ChatGPT (Proofreading & Concept Development)
  • MidJourney AI (Concept Artwork)
  • Notebook-LM (LM-Gen Podcasts)

🎵 Collaborators & Services:

  • Planet Instrumental (Storm Fall soundtrack composer)
  • Fiverr (Concept trailers, beta-reading, editorial feedback)
  • 3D Sculptors (Commissioned STL miniatures)
  • Crystal Maggie (Custom dice design & production review)
  • Player Testing (Test Gameplay Mechanics)

What is the Chronicles of Anduin?

Chronicles of Anduin: Saga of Sundered Souls is a collection of interwoven stories set in Anduin currently in development.  While a standalone project, it aims to also provide deeper lore, immersion and character narratives that will enrich the Kinslayers game world.

What is the F8 'Fate' System?

This is Kinslayers’ hybrid ruleset, blending strategy & storytelling, featuring:

  • 4 Measures for Leader Customization (Favors, Flaws, Form & Fuse)
  • 4 Measures for Roleplay & Skills Customization (Figures, Flair, Facets & Fate)

Unique Dice Mechanics (3D6-Based System):

  • The Three Fates System (3D6 Rolls) → Used for strategic choices.
  • Dark Fate (3D1 Rolls) → Represents unpredictable and dangerous moments.
  • Fated Three (3D6 Rolls) → When the stars align, fate intervenes.

This system bridges Wargaming and Roleplaying, ensuring a dynamic balance between player agency and chance, resulting in exciting, immersive battles.
